We currently do not have a program in Mexico due to the Mexican laws. Children can be adopted either independently or through DIF.
Mexico is a country rich in history. The country has roots that go beyond recorded time. It is colorful in its traditions and customs with Spanish as the predominant language.
The
Children:
Children available for adoption from Mexico range in age from birth to
16 years of age. They are mostly of indigenous heritage. Due to the complicated
legal system in Mexico
it is extremely difficult to adopt any child between going into the DIF system
as an infant until the child is approximately 4 years of age. Mexico does
have a legal process that allows for independent adoptions at birth with time
of immigration of approximately 3 months of age.
Prospective
parents:
Single women and couples who have been married for at least one year can apply
to adopt from Mexico.
Families of any size are eligible to adopt from Mexico. Families must meet the
requirements of the court considering health, income, stability, etc.
Trip
Process:
The adoption process takes two trips with your first trip requiring taking
witnesses with you to court. It takes approximately 3 months from time of
custody until a child can be immigrated to the US. This necessitates either
staying in Mexico
or arranging for a temporary guardian.
Timelines:
The time to adoption varies with document preparation completion, age of child,
gender of child, political climate and region. For independent adoptions the
time taken is for locating a child for adoption. For adoptions through DIF it
may take up to 2 years.
